Foremost among the principles of the Shia Ismaili tariqa of Islam is the recognition of the Imam-of-the-Time. Ismaili Muslims have always been guided by a living, hereditary Imam, descended from Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his progeny) through Hazrat Ali and Hazrat Bibi Fatima. In Shia belief, the Prophet designated Hazrat Ali at Ghadir Khumm as his successor, and the Imamat has continued in an unbroken line ever since.

It is this unbroken line of leadership that Imamat Day celebrates. The 50th Imam, Aga Khan V, succeeded his father, Shah Karim (s.a), on 4 February 2025, marking the current Imamat Day.

Imamat Day is a time for the Jamat to reaffirm their allegiance and gratitude to Hazar Imam, and to give thanks to Allah for the continuity of the Imamat, which lights our path in both good times and challenging ones.

On the first anniversary of Mawlana Hazar Imam’s accession, the students of The Aga Khan Hostel, Botad, went to Jamatkhana on 4th February 2026 to celebrate and commemorate the first Imamat Day following the Takht-nasini of Prince Rahim, Hazar Imam. Students dressed in their best attire, participated in prayers, enjoyed dandia food, and took photographs to mark the occasion.
