On 24 August 2025, Mr. Amin Ladhani, Academic Director of The Aga Khan Hostel, Botad, visited Life Foundation Hostel in Virar, Mumbai—an inspiring institution dedicated to nurturing youth while also caring for the elderly under a unified and compassionate vision. The visit provided a meaningful opportunity to witness firsthand a model that blends education, service, and humanity, creating an environment where learning and compassion go hand in hand.

Established in 2002, Life Foundation has been committed to empowering young men from remote regions of India by providing an enabling environment that supports higher education and personal growth. Through its collaboration with VIVA College, the foundation offers residential facilities that allow students from underserved areas to pursue quality higher education in Mumbai.

The institution has developed a well-structured and student-centered infrastructure, including a modern kitchen, spacious dining hall, library, computer laboratory, dedicated study rooms, and class-wise residential accommodations. These facilities create a disciplined and supportive academic atmosphere that promotes both learning and personal development.

Life Foundation also prioritizes health and well-being, providing healthcare support through visiting doctors and partnerships with nearby hospitals. In addition, students benefit from opportunities for holistic development, including access to sports facilities, gym activities, seminars, workshops, and career-guidance programs designed to prepare them for professional success and responsible citizenship.

Purpose of the Visit

The visit served as a valuable platform to:

Share ideas, insights, and visions for youth empowerment and community development.

• Learn from each other’s best practices in residential care and holistic education.

• Foster a stronger relationship and spirit of collaboration between The Aga Khan Hostel, Botad, and Life Foundation.

Founded in 1989, MJD Foundation has provided a dignified home for more than 300 elderly individuals who do not have family support. The foundation stands as a beacon of compassion, ensuring that every resident lives with respect, care, and a sense of belonging.

Since 2002, the Life Foundation organization has supported more than 400 students by providing academic opportunities, residential care, and employment support. Its model is truly unique—where youth and elders coexist, share experiences, and build meaningful bonds. Elders are treated with dignity and compassion, while students benefit not only from education but also from the wisdom, life lessons, and emotional support of their senior co-residents.

Heartfelt Gratitude

Warm appreciation is extended to Ms. Shehnaz Dawoodani, trustee of Life Foundation, affectionately known to hostel students as Badi Maa, for her inspiring vision and tireless service. Gratitude is also extended to President Saheb Mr. Asif Karmali for his leadership and commitment to the organization’s noble mission.

Sincere thanks to Mr. Ganesh, an alumnus of Life Foundation, and Mr. Muktar Bhai for their support, valuable time, and gracious hospitality during the visit. Their warmth and dedication made the experience both memorable and meaningful.

This visit strongly underscored the power of collaboration, compassion, and shared purpose in building institutions that not only educate but also nurture humanity.

A Touching Reunion

A particularly heartwarming moment during the visit was reconnecting with three alumni of The Aga Khan Hostel, Botad—Sujal Gaurani, Sujal Roy, and Riyaz Fatwani—who had been sent to Life Foundation Hostel to pursue their higher studies. Seeing them progressing in their academic journeys was a proud and emotional moment that reflected the lasting impact of supportive educational institutions.

Leadership and Institutional Collaboration

The visit powerfully highlighted the role of visionary leadership in driving innovation, fostering learning, and building meaningful partnerships. Mr. Amin Ladhani, Academic Director of The Aga Khan Hostel, Botad, demonstrated this through his thoughtful engagement and keen interest in understanding the Life Foundation model. His interactions reflected a commitment to exploring best practices, strengthening institutional ties, and creating environments where academic excellence is paired with the holistic development of students’ skills, character, and potential.

By connecting two institutions dedicated to education, care, and community values, the visit showcased how collaboration can serve as a catalyst for growth and opportunity. The dialogue, shared insights, and mutual learning set the stage for future joint initiatives that will expand educational access, enrich student experiences, and empower both institutions to innovate in nurturing talent. It reaffirmed that when leaders and organizations unite around a shared vision, they can generate lasting impact, foster holistic growth, and create meaningful pathways for students and communities alike.
